Local Voices: Stay Salty: Lakefacing Stories Exhibition

December 30

through

February 28, 2025
300 South between West Temple and 200 West

Of Salt and Sand is a storytelling collective that produces multimedia projects with, by, and for Utahns impacted by climate change and economic transition.

This free, outdoor public exhibition of photography tells the stories of collective memories, grief, love, and possibility for Utah’s imperiled inland sea and all the human and more-than-human life that depends on it. Walking along Broadway (300 South) between West Temple and 200 West in downtown Salt Lake City, viewers will encounter ten stories from:

  • Lulu Avila, a snowboarding instructor and founder of the Outdoor Inclusivity Project;
  • Forrest S. Cuch, former director of the Utah Division of Indian Affairs and the education director for the Ute Tribe;
  • Daniel Hernandez, former director of culture for the Tracy Aviary;
  • Jim Hopkins, a brine shrimper;
  • Flor Isabel, a mom and community activist;
  • Brad Parry, Vice Chairman and Natural Resources Officer of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation;
  • Nate and Tara Stireman, farmers and stewards of Steep Mountain Farm;
  • Sunny, who works with incarcerated people at the Utah State Correctional Facility;
  • Tea, who is currently incarcerated at the Utah State Correctional Facility;
  • Muskan Walia, a University of Utah student and organizer with Utah Youth for Environmental Solutions.

Each plakat (a sidewalk-level billboard) includes a photo of the storyteller, a written quote from their story, and a QR code to listen to their story on the Stay Salty: Lakefacing Stories podcast, produced by Of Salt and Sand. This exhibition is also part of Craft Lake City’s Local Voices program — click here to learn more.

After visiting the exhibition, we encourage you to take our online survey and share your experience! Survey responses will help our team tell the story of the full impact of the Wake the Great Salt Lake project.
